The inspiration to write came from coaching football at the youth level. Every season, a coach sees the natural athletes, the hard workers, and the just-excited-to-be-there kids. But a coach also sees the other players--those that are awkward, those that haven't been taught a good work ethic, and those that want to play, but fear failure or injury.
After several years of coaching, I decided I wanted to write something that might inspire kids to try new things, up their game and effort level, or help a teammate learn.
Many of the scenarios in Conquer or Quit came from real-life events, either experienced in my days of playing or witnessed while coaching. The characters are based on boys I've had the privilege of coaching and dads I've been blessed to coach alongside.
If a young person is inspired to do better or be more, then this book has accomplished its purpose.
